Uganda: AK47 Drops Dead

AK47

Singer AK47, real name Emmanuel Mayanja, passed away on Monday evening in Nsambya hospital under unclear circumstances.

Initial reports said he slipped and fell in his bathroom and died of heart failure, but unconfirmed reports point at possible poisoning. AK47 is a brother to musical brothers, Jose Chameleone (Joseph Mayanja), Weasel (Douglas Mayanja) and Pallaso (Pius Mayanja).

His other siblings include Henry Kasozi, Josephine Mayanja and Humphrey Mayanja. He has sang with his brothers under Leone Island, before recently joining Team No Sleep with Pallaso and Shebah.

AK47, who had just given his life to God and was working on his first gospel album, had only recently shared news of the birth of his twins. Facebook is inundated with pictures of the usually feuding Mayanja duo of Chameleone and Weasel, united in their grief.

In one picture, the tearful singers stand over AK47's body in hospital, with the latter looking like he is simply asleep.

Kampala celebrities took to Twitter and Facebook to share their condolences, with KFM's Roger Mugisha posting: "I am glad you found the Lord before your untimely demise."

Eddy Kenzo posted: "Rest in peace AK47. Bambi nze kimpeddeko banange oh God", while Juliana Kanyomozi posted, "Rest in peace AK47... it's just too terrible. Gone too soon".

He will be laid to rest in Mityana later on Wednesday.

May God rest his soul in peace
